Saturnalia (2022)
Saturnalia is a criminally overlooked little horror adventure, brilliantly broody and claustrophobic in it's style and system!
Whilst not as violent or horny as the giallo I'm familiar with, the homage is otherwise evident in the absolute nailing of the atmosphere, tone, and tale - unraveling occultish mysteries, shadowy figures skulking at the penumbra of match-light, folk-horrors clattering about unseen (until they're not 😬) - a true triumph of the genre.
I guess I played it a bit too quick and careful, as I never really engaged with the call-up-your-mates mechanic and didn't get to experience the roguelike-reset of Gravoi(?). I know the game heeds that "death ≠ failure" to skirt this, but I feel like more should have been done - challenge-wise or otherwise - to make it an inevitability at least once.
